Benefits of Birth Art

‘What would I draw if I got out of my own way?’

This is a common prompt used in birth art sessions and can open up the psyche to let fresh water flow in, watering the deep and often thirsty roots of insight and creativity.

One of the benefits of birth art is that the process teaches or reminds us how to go inwards to utilize our own resources. It helps build the practice of getting out of our own way in order to unveil and access these resources, which builds confidence and resiliency.

Birth art sessions are guided with a solution focused attitude, rather than working with fixed goals or linear thinking. The idea here is to focus on solutions that meet the needs of the moment, rather than scrambling when we hit a wall in order to try and meet predetermined goals. This benefits those in the birthing process by training the mind to listen to the body rather than the other way around. Unexpected twists and turns come up all the time during birth and when the practice of meeting them in the moment is strengthened, there tends to be favourable outcomes.

The quiet, introspective atmosphere of birth art sessions can be a reminder of how much expansion exists for us to exhale and release into. This feeling can imprint onto the nervous system in a beneficial way and can create a somatic memory of safe expansion. This can be remembered and called upon throughout the birthing process.

If you have a doula and/or midwife as a part of your care team, sharing your birth art experience with them can strengthen the bond between you and can help them gain insight on how to best support you during the birth of your baby and your process of becoming a parent.

Other benefits of participating in birth art sessions include:

  • helping women and birthing people understand the psychological & spiritual elements of birth

  • increased bonding with baby in utero, during birth and in the postpartum time

  • the feeling of being witnessed in the creative process, which can build trust and increase intuitive awareness of who truly feels supportive / who you do or don’t want in your birthing space

  • increased self-esteem & autonomy in decision making

  • honouring the inner child

The benefits of letting the creative juices flow are many and I hope you get to explore this delicious process for yourself! If you’d like to book a session or learn more about them, you can do so here.
